I never liked Mae's so this is a nice change of pace. Gone are the crowds and the surly hipster servers. The positive: getting a table without waiting, great friendly service, Great Lakes coffee, homemade jam and a tasty biscuit. The negative: forgetting the avocado on my veggie skillet. Overdone veggies and over easy eggs in said skillet. All in all I will be back to try more menu items and because of the friendly service.

Sorry whistle stop.. I tried, but when you cut corners it's noticeable.. -bar downgrade (why?!) -plastic / industrial touches -cheap bread / pancake mix / etc RIP Mae's :(

Hmm... This place was formerly Mae's, home of my favorite pancakes. I ordered coffee and pancakes of course with 2 poached eggs. The pancakes were very good still however I found eggshell in my eggs that blew the whole meal. Oh yeah, I let the server know about the eggshell and they didn't take it off the bill. C'mon, get a little common sense and fix it! I didn't care enough to pursue the $1.75. Forget it Len A's review is pretty much spot on

I'm going to try to be really objective here and not compare it to Mae's, which was my long time favorite breakfast place. I was sad that Mae's closed a few months ago, but to be honest, the service and food had taken a turn for the worse at the end of its tenure. My daughter and I wanted breakfast today, and decided to give the Whistle Stop a try. Here's the breakdown: The good: The place was really clean! They've done a nice job remodeling the restaurant. My food was good. I had latkes, topped with poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise sauce, with a side of bacon (I didn't realize some came on my plate). It was tasty, albeit a bit rich (to be expected when hollandaise sauce is used). The coffee was good - they still use Great Lakes, which is one of my favorites. My daughter had french toast and bacon, and a hot chocolate. It was nice to see some of the old menu items still on the menu. The bad: expensive. Breakfast for myself and my daughter as $24, not including tip. My side of bacon was $4, and not all that great. My daughter's hot chocolate came out scalding hot. I can understand that hot chocolate should be hot, but she's 7; we had to dump a bunch of ice in it to make it drinkable. No one was really there, either. I'd go back...I'd go back...if someone else was paying.

I have no idea why people thought Mae's was so amazing because I ate there many times and never thought it was that great. This place is the exact same. Not that great but good enough. I still see people waiting outside and I still see a lot of the same things on the menu. Yeah, the decor has changed and they don't serve Faygo. Don't really see what that has to do with the food.

If I had never been to Mae's, I'd say it is your average breakfast, but there is nothing special about it anymore. The food is fine, just not prepared with the same care they used to put into it. The hillbilly Bennie no longer has a fresh grilled homemade biscuit with juicy fried chicken on top. Instead, it's a dry piece of frozen chicken thrown into the fryer. The biscuit didn't come grilled and just wasn't as fresh. The Mexican skillet had black beans from a can tossed in and avocado that was starting to turn brown, but decent flavor. The toast didn't come with the homemade jam like it used to. Service was friendly and they welcome dogs on the patio. Would I go back? I guess...if I was too lazy to cook...because it's walking distance from my house, not because there is anything that I actually crave.

My first time here (thanks Linda Allen)... My order was not clearly understood, and both our waitress Jessica and the owner, Dave went above and beyond to correct the miscommunication. Ultimately, I enjoyed a delicious brunch in a pleasant atmosphere with a very personable staff. The confusion happened because I ordered a dish with bacon and sausage... asked that they omit the pork, and as I said there was "miscommunication." Anyway, it all turned out well and I intend to return and I do recommend! The menu is fabulous and features one of my favorite items as a side, avocados! Kudos, and thanks again, to my friend Linda, the chef, the waitress (Jessica), and owner, Dave.

Stopped in for a late brunch, and the staff did not disappoint. Fast, friendly service is what I always want, and that's what I got. I didn't have much competition at the bar, however, I did feel complete after my meal. No nonsense this time. I did some fact checking on my previous review. I was informed that the jam was indeed, home made (sorry Bob). I'll try it again, next time. I did have a quick talk with Jen(who has also reviewed the business on Yelp, here), and she assured me that the Whistle Stop is trying to live up to the demand that we, as customers, have for quality service and food. She, and the other members of the staff know that change is hard for some. They are taking it in stride, trying to fill all the gaps, just as the clientele are adjusting to change. Thanks, Jen, for being receptive and kind today. A listening ear, and a bit of kindness, goes a long way (after a "W" skillet).

I'll admit I never dined here when it was Mae's so I cannot compare. My review is based off my one and only experience for breakfast a few months back. I remember leaving and saying "let's never go back here." I was completely underwhelmed. I thought it was be quiet charming and tasty food since I remember seeing lines out the door in the past. But no such luck, just boring diner quality breakfast. I had the eggs Benedict and I found the sauce to be bland and boring. Id rather spend my money at Toast then here.

Well. Today wAs my first experience back at what used to be my beloved Mae's. 1. As soon as I walked in it felt different. The decor was tacky. The staff was different. The feeling was gone. 2. The food seemed to be as prepared without as much love as it was before. My toast wasn't as good, my Avacado slices looked thrown on the plate vs. Precisely cut and placed. The eggs were ok. The coffee wasn't as good as Mae's was, seemed almost watery today. The entire breakfast seemed almost thrown together...not carefully placed as Mae's was. 3. The decor again. It felt homeU and Detroit before, utilizing Michigan products and produce, now cheap and brown. In conclusion, super bummed. I wish I had my Mae's back :(

I loved Mae's for these reasons, homemade pop tarts, $5 bloody Mary's with Tito's, chai latte with domain de Canton, and the positively Detroit salad with portobello and grilled chicken for $12. Whistle stop does not have domain de canton, homemade pop tarts, chai latte, and their bloody's are $8 and have Well vodka instead of Tito's. The Detroiter salad is $10 without portobello and chicken and is not even half what it used to be, they no longer have the poppyseed dressing and the goat cheese is not fried nor was it goat cheese....it did come with a tasty biscuit. The one thing I didn't like about Mae's was the wait... And this place has no wait..... I figured out why really fast. We had a borderline gross meal for $50.... Sorry whistle stop.... I won't be back! My neighborhood coney spot makes you look like shit and cost 1/4 of the amount. Mae's! Please come back! This place is getting 2 stars because we got really good, fast, friendly service. Also the brown wall that replaced the quirky pictures is really ugly to look at.

It's probably not fair to compare this place to the greatness that was Mae's, but seeing as they bought the recipes from the prior owners when they took over and broadcast this fact, it can't be helped. The fact is that I probably wouldn't have eaten here if it hadn't been Mae's before. I went for lunch and ordered the Portland Special, which was still part of the new menus they had put together. A minute later the server came back and told me that they no longer made that particular sandwich and it would be removed from the menu. I could have a regular fried chicken sandwich instead. No thanks. As disappointed as I was, I fell back to the Hillbilly Benedict. Fortunately they were still making this. Sort of. Instead of a wonderful, juicy Southern fried chicken breast, it came with a flat, processed chicken breast that looked and tasted as though it hadn't been fried in anything more than a dusting of flour. The spicy succulent treat I remembered had been reduced to a bland starchy mess. I will note that my friend enjoyed his California Club sandwich and they were able to accommodate his requests (no bacon, mayo instead of aioli) with no trouble. My first visit seemed to indicate that the Whistle Stop won't be continuing the things that made Mae's so special. I don't plan a second visit to see what they do instead.

I don't think anyone who loved Mae's could ever like this place. The stickers pulled off the hood of the stove, the old school sodas gone, the turquoise stools tossed out, they erected a huge counter near the chefs & put up the tackiest liquor store-esque neon "open" sign. Needless to say, the charm is completely gone. The menu mimics a standard low cost Coney Island restaurant (to add along to the low-cost feel of the place now). It used to have culture, beauty & uniqueness -- even the loud mouth manager from Mae's had become a welcoming smile that I'd grown to love & expect. Now it feels like eating at Denny's. The owner is obviously old & out of touch. Profit shouldn't be the only motivation. Dining out is a pastime that we value & use to spend time with our loved ones & create memories. There's nothing memorable about this place. Back to Toast or Fly Trap I go. Oh yeah, there was food, it was edible.

It's hard for me to not compare this place to Mae's, and Mae's it certainly is not. Our server was very nice and attentive so I'm not concerned about service. The food was "okay" and the atmosphere is completely gone. No cool tunes, no turquoise bar stools and a plain brown wall with no cool photos on it. Sorry, but the atmosphere and vibe is one of the things that brought me there. It just doesn't feel the same anymore and I don't know that I'll be back anytime soon. No vegan skillet either. I had to cobble my own plate together off of the sides menu. :-/

I loved Mae's but the service was always terrible and the wait was always interminable. Whistle Stop solved both of those problems with killer service and no wait times. The food is great, I had the latke breakfast and everything turned out crispy and delicious. We were killed with kindness by Phil (come see him here, he's awesome) who sent us out the door with a smile and Great Lakes Coffee to go. This is one of my new favorite breakfast spots.

Yes of course I miss the vibe that was Maes, the character, the friendly faces....nobody likes change. However, I have been there 3 times now and I'm still a fan. I've always had great service, everybody has been very friendly. The menu still has a wide variety and all of mine and my friends meals have been delicious. I'm still glad to have a friendly local neighborhood diner. :)

I took my daughters to breakfast this morning and we were all completely underwhelmed. The server was absolutely the best aspect of our experience. I ordered Challah french toast and it was definitely not any Challah that I have had. The bread was one step up from Wonder bread. The corned beef hash tasted and appeared to have come from a can. Sadly, the biggest thing missing from this place is a soul. The new owners have stripped any passion or love from this once charming place. This place was also expensive as heck. I suggest that you save your money and go to a Leos Coney Island.

I want "Mae.s"" back. Detroit feeling is gone. It's quiet & controlled feeling. I still go back because of location but it's not the same. Why won't the new owner see this was a trendy/hipster place. He's making it uncool.

What used to be a great place is now mediocre at best. At this rate hopefully the owners will make some changes ASAP.

You would think that after a few mediocre reviews, the new owners of Mae's would try to improve their score by improving their service. But no. Instead, they write biased, 5 star reviews for their own business to raise the score. That tells you something about their character.

Simply the worst. This guy came in and ruined an amazing place. The menu in-original, cheap and bland. The new decor dated to 1990. It's very sad. The whistle stop in Birmingham is gross and so is this one.

I knew it was coming when I first heard that the place was up for sale. I was just really hoping that whoever took ownership would realize that they were acquiring something special and not to make big changes. That has NOT been the case. I was a religious Mae's patron, even so much that I ended up buying a house on the same street. In a small way, it was like my 'Cheers'. The 'Whistlestop' is no Mae's, and it's impossible not to compare the two considering the opportunity the new owner had to keep the momentum that this place has built over the years. The hardest thing about owning a restaurant is getting people to come (and come again), that was never an issue at Mae's. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. What has happened at Mae's reminds of what I often see in movies. Someone comes in, purchases a local business and completely strips it of all it's character. Gone are the tin signs of our favorite Detroit brands, Vernors/Faygo (which btw isn't being served anymore), silhouettes of the adhesive from the stickers on the range hood are the only memory left of those, and the best seats in the house (back bar right in front of the range, watching Bob make the best egg dishes) have been replaced by a high top serving counter. I kept going back and giving it a shot, partly out of convenience, but more so because I wanted to give them time to iron out the kinks and bring back that 'feel' that Mae's had. That hasn't happened. The last straw for me came during my most recent visit. A beautiful Saturday morning, around 11am; I sat down and received a new menu- took me a while go to through it and notice all of the changes. The Portland sandwich (a Mae's staple and customer fav) was gone. I went ahead and ordered the next best dish, the Migas (which might I add, was more expensive, along with everything else on the menu). It came and wasn't bad at all, until I took a spoonful of the salsa that has always been a huge component of the dish. This doesn't taste the same, where's the cumin? This taste likes store bought salsa, kinda like Garden Fresh. As I look for someone to ask about this, I glance at the fridge that USED to be filled with Faygo; only to see it filled with tubs of, you guessed it, Garden Fresh salsa. When I asked about the shift, the owner tells me that it's just not practical to make the salsa in house without preservatives, it goes bad every few days. Ummm yea, that's why you continue to make fresh batches, like they've been doing for years. Sorry for the long rant, it's more so a way for me to properly say goodbye to what was such a great place. While I know this may sound like an insult to the new Whistlestop, that is not my intent. For what it's worth, the Whistlestop is a decent spot, and alone would scratch the itch for those looking for brunch. My issue is, they inherited something amazing, only to turn it in to something 'ok'. I will miss Mae's, and I'll hold on to the dream that some day it'll be back.
